Each state administers its own bar exam to assess whether a candidate is competent to practice law in that jurisdiction. The Bar Exam is a key step in becoming licensed to practice law within that state. The bar exam is administered over either 2 or 3 days, depending on the jurisdiction. While each state has a specific format, nearly every state includes both the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) and a state-specific section that usually consists of essays.
The MBE is consistent across all jurisdictions. It tests your knowledge of common law principles in six substantive areas with 200 multiple-choice questions. The MBE is incorporated into the bar exam of every state except Louisiana and Washington.
The other portion of the bar exam is usually state-specific; each jurisdiction tests candidates on unique aspects of its state laws. The format usually requires essay answers to complex fact patterns covering both general legal principles and state specific laws. A few states, such as New York and Florida, also utilize multiple-choice questions in their state-specific portion of the bar exam.
